The town was originally settled as part of Rowley in 1639. Initially, the land was mostly used for cattle. Over time the population grew and Georgetown was officially incorporated as its own town in 1838. Shoe making was the predominant business for many decades before the last show factory finally closed in 1970. Georgetown has it's own school system for grades K-12. Perley Elementary School handles grades K-1. Penn Brook Elementary runs grades 2-5. Georgetown Middle/High School teaches 6-12. All the schools are located within a close proximity to the downtown.
